DC Arc Flash Study

DC incident energy analysis for solar, battery, and DC UPS systems.

AC arc flash methodology doesn't apply to DC systems · different fault physics, different waveform, different PPE category. Solar PV farms, battery rooms, data centre DC UPS · all need DC-specific incident energy analysis. We do it under IEEE 1584.1 (the DC method, not the AC one).

Why this matters

Why your AC arc flash study leaves your battery room legally exposed

Most arc flash studies are AC-only. They use IEEE 1584 (the AC standard). For DC systems · solar PV farms, lead-acid or lithium battery rooms, telecom DC plants, data centre DC UPS · this method does not apply. The fault physics, current waveform, and PPE requirement are different. NFPA 70E DC requirements (Annex D) are explicit, but most plant arc flash studies skip DC. Result: your battery room safety labels are non-compliant, your maintenance team's PPE is wrong category, and an OSHA / DGFASLI audit finds the gap. A DC arc flash study under IEEE 1584.1 closes the gap.

Method

How we deliver DC Arc Flash Study

CEng MIE India-signed deliverables · LiDAR-powered where applicable · digital twin handover ready · routes to the Power System Studies practice lead within 24 hours.

01

DC system inventory

Battery banks (chemistry, cell count, internal resistance, ageing factor), solar arrays (string size, MPPT configuration), DC bus configuration, fuses + breakers + isolators.

02

Available short-circuit current computation

Battery short-circuit per IEEE 485 + manufacturer test data. Solar array short-circuit per Isc + module count + irradiance derating.

03

Incident energy analysis

IEEE 1584.1 (2022) method · DC-specific arc gap, arc voltage, working distance, and exposure time.

04

PPE category determination

PPE category per NFPA 70E DC table. Arc flash boundary computed. Labels generated.

05

Mitigation + sign-off

Where energy is excessive: DC fuse upgrade, mid-string isolators, remote disconnect, arc-flash-rated PPE. CEng MIE-signed report + DC-specific labels.

Standards + compliance

Built to the standards your auditors quote

Reports reference the international and national standards your regulators, F500 audit teams, and corporate process safety leads cite. Every deliverable signed by a Chartered Engineer (CEng MIE India).

What this looks like in production

Three landmark engagements from our verified roster · quantified outcomes, no client names disclosed without written permission.

Solar farm, India · 200 MW · post-incident

Arc flash incident in DC combiner box led to full DC system AF study. Identified inadequate fusing + working clearance. Re-engineered + DC-AF labels installed.

Data centre, Australia · DC UPS room

48 V DC plant with 1,200 Ah battery. IEEE 1584.1 study delivered. PPE category re-classified Cat 2 (previously Cat 1 from incorrect AC calc). Audit pass.

Battery storage, KSA · 100 MWh BESS

Lithium BESS array. DC AF computed at module + string + DC bus levels. Mid-string isolators specified. Maintenance PPE programme updated.

Frequently asked

DC Arc Flash Study · the practical questions

Do I need a DC arc flash study if I already have an AC one?
Yes if you have battery rooms, DC UPS plants, solar PV systems, or DC charging stations. The AC study doesn't apply to DC fault scenarios. Most modern plants have DC systems · this gap is increasingly being flagged in audits.
How does battery ageing affect the analysis?
Significantly · internal resistance rises over life, available fault current declines. We model end-of-life (highest fault current, often counter-intuitively from worst-case derating) and beginning-of-life cases. Mid-life is rarely the worst case.
Is there standard PPE for DC arc flash?
Yes · NFPA 70E DC table gives PPE category by incident energy. Arc-flash-rated DC clothing certified to ASTM F1506. Glove ratings same as AC.
Can you bundle this with the AC study?
Yes · for plants with both AC and DC systems (most modern plants), we deliver combined AC + DC arc flash analysis with consolidated PPE programme and labels.
How often does this need to be redone?
Every 5 years per NFPA 70E (same as AC). Re-done immediately on major DC system change (battery bank replacement, solar string reconfiguration, DC UPS upgrade). Part of our Safety AMC retainer.
