Harmonic Analysis Study

Harmonic measurement, simulation, and filter design to IEEE 519 compliance.

VFDs, rectifiers, and arc furnaces inject harmonics. Capacitor banks resonate. Transformers heat. Motors over-vibrate. Utility imposes penalties. We measure, simulate, design tuned or detuned filters, and bring you back inside IEEE 519 · with the smallest filter that does the job.

Why this matters

Why harmonic distortion is the silent capex driver you're not measuring

Variable frequency drives now run 40-60% of industrial motors. Each is a non-linear load injecting 5th, 7th, 11th, 13th harmonics back into the bus. Capacitor banks installed for power factor correction become resonant tuned circuits at exactly the harmonic frequency that's being injected. The capacitors fail every 18 months. Transformers run hot. Motor bearings vibrate. Utility imposes harmonic distortion penalties. The single biggest hidden capex driver in brownfield plants we audit is harmonic distortion that nobody measured because nobody was looking. A harmonic study quantifies it, designs the filter, sizes the capex, and gives you a clear ROI case.

Method

How we deliver Harmonic Analysis Study

CEng MIE India-signed deliverables · LiDAR-powered where applicable · digital twin handover ready · routes to the Power System Studies practice lead within 24 hours.

01

Harmonic measurement

On-site measurement at PCC + major LV buses using IEC 61000-4-7 / IEEE 519-compliant power quality analysers. Minimum 7-day window across operating cycles.

02

Model build

ETAP or DigSILENT Harmonic Analysis module configured. Non-linear load sources (VFDs, rectifiers, arc furnaces) modelled per manufacturer harmonic spectrum or measured signature.

03

Resonance scan

Frequency scan from 0-5000 Hz. Resonance peaks identified. Existing capacitor banks tested for resonance risk.

04

Filter design

Tuned filters (5th, 7th, 11th, 13th) or detuned reactors sized for IEEE 519 compliance at PCC. Active harmonic filter sized where passive solution is impractical (e.g. variable load mix).

05

Validation + sign-off

Filter design validated by re-simulation. Expected post-filter TDD and THD tabulated per bus. CEng MIE-signed report. Filter SOR (Statement of Requirements) ready for procurement.

Standards + compliance

Built to the standards your auditors quote

Reports reference the international and national standards your regulators, F500 audit teams, and corporate process safety leads cite. Every deliverable signed by a Chartered Engineer (CEng MIE India).

What this looks like in production

Three landmark engagements from our verified roster · quantified outcomes, no client names disclosed without written permission.

Refinery, India · capacitor bank failure root cause

Capacitor bank failing every 14 months root-caused to 5th harmonic resonance from new VFD installation. Designed detuned reactor solution. Bank lifespan restored to 8+ years.

Data centre, Singapore · IEEE 519 PCC violation

TDD measured at 11.2% (IEEE 519 limit: 5%). Designed active harmonic filter. Post-install TDD 3.4%. PCC violation resolved.

Cement plant, KSA · arc furnace + VFD interaction

Combined arc furnace + VFD load created multi-harmonic resonance condition. Hybrid passive + active solution designed. Utility penalty avoidance seven-figure/yr.

Frequently asked

Harmonic Analysis Study · the practical questions

Do you do harmonic measurement on-site, or just simulation?
Both. Measurement is mandatory for accurate filter design · simulation alone gives only approximate non-linear load characterisation. We use Fluke 1750/1760 or Dranetz PX5 analysers for site measurement, minimum 7-day window.
Passive filter vs active filter · how do you decide?
Passive (tuned or detuned) for stable load profiles with predictable harmonic signature. Active for variable load mix, multiple harmonics simultaneously, or where harmonic profile changes seasonally. We size both and present trade-off.
Will the filter design eliminate utility penalties?
Designed to take you below IEEE 519 PCC limits (TDD 5% / individual harmonic 3%). Most utility penalty schemes mirror IEEE 519. Specific utility penalty contracts (India ABT, Saudi REGAR) audited as part of scope.
How does harmonic analysis tie into power factor correction?
Directly. Most resonance problems originate from a capacitor bank that was sized for power factor only, without considering the harmonic spectrum. Modern PFC + harmonic mitigation should be designed jointly.
Can you do this for an entire campus, or only per plant?
Both. We've delivered campus-wide studies (e.g. petrochemical complex with 12 plants on a common PCC) and single-plant studies. Campus scope adds 2-3 weeks for the inter-plant interaction modelling.
